Episode Three was one of the most challenging and the most fun to shoot. It was challenging because it was our second day of shooting and the first day had taken a lot out of us. Gone was the excitement of the first day! There were also a lot of new elements that we didn’t have the first day: extras, dealing with the pool and costume/makeup changes, the light of the day, etc. So going into it was a bit overwhelming.
We had called the extras in a little early, so they were waiting around a lot, which we felt badly about. But as soon as we started getting into the shooting of their stuff, everyone forgot about the long wait because it was a helluva blast!
First up was our “Three Hotties.” In the episode, Cameron invites her entourage to the pool party so we took some awesome slow-mo footage of them walking in. In the front of the group were three topless dudes showing off their goods. It was ridiculous, but some of the most amazing directing I’ve ever done. I cued them by calling out the actions they were to take, “It’s the KISS! The LICK! And the WATER BOTTLE!” We were all laughing at this silliness, but it really paid off!
Then it was time to get in the pool. Luckily it was March in Los Angeles, but the pool was not heated and everyone was feeling a little hesitant to jump in the cold water – especially in their skinnies! But once they were in, it was all fun and games. The fun the actors and extras were having is clearly evident in the footage and we made sure to get a lot of it!
But the actors weren’t the only ones who got to enjoy the pool. To capture this MTV-style party, our DP, Frankie, switched to handheld so he could roam around the party and capture the shenanigans. I was following close behind him and yelling at the actors of what to do next. Take a shot! Backflip into the pool! Chicken fighting! Frankie was really getting into the action and at one point, he stepped a little too close on the edge of the pool and lost his footing!!! The rockstar he is, he managed to “toss” his beautiful Red Epic camera to the side before taking a plunge into the freezing cold pool himself. I grabbed the camera and took it to safety and we lost no footage. His poor lens was done but he magically decided to use one of his less favorite lenses! Still no one likes to lose a lens… but after a quick dry-off and changing into some of Nicola’s flower pajama pants, he jumped right back in to finish the scene!
